The point is that Mew is a secret and not even needed for Dex completion, so the original are a nice even 150 and Mew makes 151 which still looks and sounds good .

It wasn't based on any hardware limitations because Gold and Silver run on the exact same hardware as RBY and they fully implemented genders in those games.

souless. things like nidoran, and (female) mr. mime are interesting examples of how things have changed over the years. 20 years from now, a kid is going to run into nidoran for the first time, and wonder why this is the only species that has two slots for each gender, and then go on to learn a bit about how mechanics have changed from gen 1 to now.

Gender and breeding were a mistake.
They seem to have developed the breeding system to make up for being unable to transfer Pokemon from RBY to GSC, but in doing so they changed the nature of what Pokemon were from pocket MONSTERS to cattle that can be bred and farmed.
