The only thing HG/SS didn't do right was carry over Crystal's availability improvements (eg. Sneasel in Ice Path), but at least they brought the Safari Zone back in with stuff like Larvitar.

Funnily enough most of the Pokémon Crystal didn’t fix the availability of (slugma, Larvitar, misdreavous, murkrow, etc) are the ones that are made available earlier in the safari zone, plus some other originally kanto exclusive mons. So really I see HGSS as more of a side grade in terms of Pokémon availability from Crystal
