It was originally meant to reflect the Red vs Green rivalry present in the Japanese games, being the two main versions and having Bulbasaur vs Charmander happen if the protagonist chose Bulbasaur.
They scrapped it in order to appease western fans with a Red vs Blue battle with Charizard and Blastoise instead, which happens when the protagonist chooses Charmander.
