Octillery is not a bad Pokémon at all.

In Gen 2 it gets all the beams + Flamethrower, making it really good actually.

Yeah, to be fair Johto before Morty is pretty tough.
like, you have to battle SCYTHER, MILTANK and GENGAR as the Gym aces.
In a non-powercrept gen, those things are stupidly dangerous
they just dropped the ball after, not like they continue at this pace really. Gyms 5 - 7 are pitiful but Kingdra is a monster too.

Why? Vibrava's speed stat is a vast improvement and the addition of dragon type is only beneficial in a playthrough. Plus arena trap is a really shit ability for grinding.

it's funny because Gen 7 introduced Pheramosa and Zeraora that made the speed creep even worse than it was in Gens 5 through 6
And then in Gen 8 we get the fastest Pokemon in the entire series to the point where it naturally outspeeds common Scarfers.

Yea Miltank honestly has some pretty crazy stats for that point in the game, base 80 is actually quite high by early game standards so it hits HARD with stab stomp, and then it’s bulk and speed aka everything else that matters, is just absolutely nuts. That’s why everyone has a hard time with Whitney, it’s one of the few times the player is meaningfully dwarfed in terms of power level so she actually feels like a boss fight.

Based as hell, used a miltank in silver and it felt fantastic to use, base 80 attack isn’t even bad and is plenty to work with when you’re outspeeding everything, tanking hits like it’s nothing, and then casually healing up with milk drink.

It wasn't an attempt to subdue Power Creep. It was an attemp at giving them overall better stat spreads to make them all somewhat viable for VGC doubles without their BSTs being higher than older Pokemon. It seems like it was done fairly late too because those speed stats can contradict official information about the Pokemon (Vikavolt is described as being fast and acrobatic in the Dex, Alolan Sandshrew was described as being faster than regular Sandshrew on the Pokemon Sun and Moon website. In reality, Vikavolt is one of the slowest Gen 7 Pokemon and both Sandshrews and Sandlashes have the same speed stats)

But Camerupt has a reason to be a mixed attacker, due to its type. Octillery's high attack doesn't make any sense because it's all about shooting beams out of it's mouth. They should have swapped its attack with its HP.

Reminder that travel speed =/= combat speed.
For example, a housecat can go from laying down to top speed in just a second, while a plane needs to pick up speed before it can get in the air and start really moving quickly.
So it actually makes 100% perfect sense for Purugly to be faster than Latios given the conditions they're fighting in.
