How well does Gen 1 (and 2) hold up today?
I want to play through every gen.
I know they have some major mechanical differences compared to newer gens but are they at least fun?
Or should I skip these games and just play the remakes?

The shitty inventory in RBY is the only real complaint I can lob at it.
You can actually run out of room and not be able to carry important key items needed to progress in the story.

Gen 2 holds up well, outside of the annoying box system (but you can clone, so it's a fair trade-off IMO). Gen 1, not so much. The item storage is smaller and there aren't any pockets. The AI is the retarded and spams the super-effective move even if it doesn't do damage. The backsprites are ugly. The game has no postgame aside from Cerulean cave. FRLG are boring, but unless you care for Missingno and other glitches, they're better than the original RBY overall.

I'm replaying Yellow and Crystal to make a Live Dex in Yellow by trading back mons from Crystal. Then I'll make teams to beat Stadium and Stadium 2. IMO the biggest downside of older gens is the grinding, but you can speed up shit in emulators so it's not a big deal. And also the shit-tier movesets. Rhyhorn learning 0 ground type moves always baffles me.

Gen 1 is still good, the glitches make for a unique experience. Gen 2 is however slow as shit and has aged terribly. I would suggest skipping both gen 2 and its remakes because they're both awful.

What's the best emulator to play Stadium? It's been ages since I played Banjo Kazooie but I remember Stadium having graphic glitches regarding moves like Earthquake and some pokemon portraits.

Honest opinion from someone who grew up with neither?

Gen 1 has aged pretty poorly, lacks many QoLs that make the game irritating (like the super limited amount of space for items, the horribly clunky PC, the fact that you have to activate HMs via the menu), the AI is very limited, the game is very unbalanced sometimes to a frustrating degree. The good thing is that it can get surprisingly challenging, like the second level of Rock Tunnel with the high amount of trainers still left.

Gen 2 is pretty good overall. Many QoL improvements were applied, the battle system is much improved and balanced, the AI feels more dynamic, there are daily events and rebattles to keep things fresh, and in general it's much more enjoyable to replay. My only issue is the leveling of your opponents that can be oddly low compared to gen 1 the more you advance.

For gen 1 I definitely recommend the remakes instead. But for gen 2 I actually like the originals better.

I don't care about the n64 games. Is it possible to play on my 3ds and trade between older games with the bonus online features? It's been forever since I used that shit to store all of my mons from X, Omega Ruby and Moon into Ultra Sun.
