2. I guess. If you have access to a 3DS or DSi, I'd probably still recommend modding those and playing Platinum through that. If you're completely out of options, this game is serviceable at giving you the Sinnoh experience mostly as it was in 2006. If you're interested in things like Contests or Secret Bases, those features were gutted and replaced with less robust content but for basic playthroughs it's fine. Hell, you're probably better off if you're more interested in the multiplayer component like the Grand Underground or trading and battling.

Not really. Contests in BDSP are streamlined but in a good way. They're a massive improvement over the DPPt Contests.

Secret Bases in BDSP are just a sidegrade to the originals. It's the same thing (placing things in a cave) just what you place is different.

Brilliant Diamond was my first play through for Sinnoh. As a kid, I started with gen 1 and stoped with Sapphire on GBA. As an adult, I picked up White and a 3DS, so I skipped Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.

Aside from a general understanding of the plot and that Cynthia was too be feared (first encountered White… it was a bloodbath), I played the games blind. Admittedly, having three mythical Pokémon likely tainted the experience, but I honestly had a lot of fun. No grinding and the Cynthia fight came down to Mew versus Garchomp down to the last move.

As a stand alone Pokémon game, I would easily give it a 7/10 “would buy again” rating.

The exp share only really makes the early game easier, it's the friendship mechanic which really fucks it over. Cynthia will barely be able to hit you unless you use a team of mons that you caught at Victory Road

I would argue the EXP share wasn’t that much help against Cynthia. Friendship is a maybe. Here’s the real difference maker: Fairy types. Specifically, you can run Dazzling Gleam on multiple mons via TM purchase.

If you want to make the BDSP Cynthia fight harder, ban all fairy type moves.

exactly, Platinum is alright, as in it's the bare minimum.
newer entries have LESS than the bare minimum.

XY doesn't have full enemy teams
ORAS and BDSP doesn't have all content from the third version
SM doesn't have gyms
LGPE doesn't have postgame
SwSh doesn't have a full region in base game (10 routes and no dungeons lolololol wtf). it also doesn't have all Pokemon and moves because of bullshit

PLA doesn't have multiplayer battling, and doesn't have a functioning battle system, while we're at it. it's still better than your usual Pokémon game, I guess

The game is full of bugs but non of them are game-breaking (other than that saving inside gyms from the first version, because I did not suffer because who fucking saves inside a gym) or time-consuming as having to wait 1 minute for a health bar to get down. I have nothing against Diamond and Pearl as a concept, but the original DS games were a pain in the ass to play in og hardware and still is. These are the best definitive way to play Sinnoh, may not be the best, may not be the one people wanted, but it is.

I wasn't planning on playing it, but I found it on Amazon for $10 used, so thought why the Hell not.

I'm about halfway through. For me, it's a nice nostalgia trip. I haven't actually played DPP in since I was a kid and I'm getting surprised bits of nostalgia.

Gameplay wise? It's pretty janky. Graphics suck, it's slow as Hell, the art sucks, but again, I paid $10 so I'm pretty content. Compared to SWSH and other recent games, I'd definitely say there is a difficulty spike more akin to older games, even with the exp share.

If you can get it under $20, I'd say give it a shot.
