Not really unheard of for a pokemon to lose spots for something else spotty, small and angular, like more teeth, claws or scales. It happened to the Nidorino, Nidorina, Croconaw, Lairon, and Fraxure for example.
Similar cases are Crobat losing fangs and inner ears but gaining fingers and toes. Or the Treecko line gaining claws and blades, changing the orbs in their designs from Treecko's fingers to Sceptile's seeds
