Smogon sweatfest(complete with Legendaries and UBs on Blue later teams and some gym leaders gaining pseudos) is NOT difficulty or the good design the franchise needs.
Volt White and Pokemon Advanced esp. did it better and made it more engaging. By that virtue I'd say they are the objectively better balanced, better designed and ultimately superior romhacks
