>rival appearing everywhereLiterally not a problem in either BW1 or BW2. Only game the rival stopped being a problem was Hoenn and that's because they're so pathetic they give up after Mossdeep. In fact the only time it was ever an issue was for Sun/Moon because of the long cutscenes and being forced to watch each animation end before the text boxes would continue.

>100% linear regionThis has ALWAYS been bait, Hoenn and Sinnoh are the only regions in the franchise to even be remotely "non-linear" but you're still forced to go Route -> Town -> Route -> Town for every gym. Unova has just as many side areas and optional locations off the beaten path, they just don't connect to other routes as much.
