A lot of it is due to the country being quite poor and underdeveloped compared to China and Japan until the american influence post Korean War, so it's a bit of a mishmash of korean culture, japanese and chinese culture from the numerous occupations, and westernization from america. Honestly it's a super comfy country with lots of hospitality and a group-eating culture, as a westerner you'll easily make friends and feel more welcome than in china or japan. T. traveled and lived for a while there.
