It would be based and lore-accurate. Alain is canonically the strongest trainer in the Ashime. His feats far surpass every other champion. Leon's only considered the strongest because Alain never bothered to compete until now.

Lance, Iris, Cynthia, Leon and are the only important characters in the M8, cause only them have been shown through the series
Alain, Steven and Diantha won't even show up till the start of the M8 tournament. I think it should be really obvious they're only there to job to other trainers in the first round
Steven will job to Ash, Alain will job to Leon and Diantha will job to Cynthia

He did have plot armor, but Alain's plot armor was even bigger than his. Kinda funny that Siebold is the only trainer in the entire anime who defeated Alain. It would be funny to have him in the M8 as a wild card instead of Alain, especially considering we still have to see a water type specialist competing in the PWC

If they cared about character development (which they don't) they would have Alain thinking he is better than Ash, underestimate him, say BURASTO BAAAHN again and lose, because Ash has grown (since he's now a league champion himself and has battled people way stronger than Alain since).
