Correct, HGSS actually made the level curve worse, blocking off more areas until beating the radio tower section but keeping the levels of said areas intact from GSC. At least GSC had the nonlinearity excuse for everything past Mahogany.

I'm pretty sure the cutscenes he is talking about are the ones where a lot of stuff happens (Team Plasma attacking Opelucid City or the Kyurem transformation). And I don't see why having story is a bad aspect, maybe Alola had too much but BW2 were not that long and they were spread out.

I like gen 1 aesthetics. The sprites, the early concept and promo art where they had no idea what the fuck they were doing and would constantly do little design changes. Everything is too sterile now even the fucking concept art for these games hold nothing interesting.
