>>5056908190% of megas got cucked for not being obtainable in a main story playthrough. Doesn't help that XY has no postgame either so all the megas in XY that arent the Kanto starters and lucario may as well not exist for a large chunk of players.
Even the few other ones you CAN get in the main story have something to be said about how shit the gimmick was implemented (gengar is a trade evo, the ampharosite is out in water on the one optional route in the game, aerodactyl can only be obtained randomly through rock smash so basically no one would ever use it on a normal playthrough unless they build their team beforehand, and ambomasnows mega stone is only obtainable after 7 badges)
And even if you want to count all those (I think abomasnow is fine) that's still only four other fucking mega evos in a main story playthrough when the game has no postgame.
So yeah, fundamentally for most players mega evolution was a brand new gimmick for Kanto starter, lucario, and ambomasnow fans. Maybe gengar, ampharos and aerodactyl fans too for a small percentage of players.
If it weren't for the starters and lucario being unavoidable gifts, most people would never even have used mega evolution in pokemon XY.
Absolute dogshit way to handle the gimmick. Would've been good if they were just all or at least mostly obtainable before you beat the game, or if the game had the most postgame out of any pokemon game then maybe that'd be fine, but no, it's basically just a gimmick for charizard and lucario.
When I think of alola I can remember using z moves fondly on most of my pokemon, and even some of the exclusive z moves came into play in my playthroughs, but when I think of kalos I don't even think of mega evolution because it was so shittily implemented that it's less relevant and memorable to me than the TM for ice punch in gen 2.
I've used more ice punch TMs in gen 2 playthroughs than I've used mega evolutions in XY playthroughs. TM33 is more memorable than megas. Thanks game freak.
