Butterflies are just insects (yes there is a difference) so if you want the "BUG" bug pokemon i would put nincada there but there are a lot of buggy pokemon you could choose from

Change water to Vaporeon and steel to Melmetal. Bug is fine, but there are a ton of bug types that perfectly encapsulate bugs, and same goes for dragons though I will give you that Salamence certainly feels “more” dragony than the others.

Ribombee is literally the closest mon you have to a stock fairy design. It fits the look better than Clefairy which is more like a fusion between a smiling face and the old kaiju direction for Gen 1.

If that’s the direction you’re going for, I’d suggest Weavile for dark. Darkrai’s design always had more in common with ghosts, considering that’s the type truly embodying boogeymen, shadows, and darkness. Contrast Weavile, who definitely embodies the sneakiness, the underhanded physical attacks, and the more “wild/predatory” aspects the type is built around.

Still think darkrai's fine actually! Dark type isn't inherently about shadows or being mean or evil or the edgy type; though not to say they aren't all those things, but it's a type about unclearness and ambiguity and i think that fits him well.
Dark types are monsters that *could* be malicious or dangerous, but are generally just unfriendlier than usual pokemon. A good distinction i think. They typically keep to themselves. They usually have a hint of edginess. Or they're just little gremlins and goblins.
A shadowy monster that lives in the darkness is probably very sneaky, just wants to be alone, and protects himself from people by inflicting them with nightmares. Doesn't mean any harm though as the pokedex says he's not inherently malicious. I think he's a good mascot for the type

Dark types unironically have more dex entries emphasizing camaraderie than any other type. The number that “keep to themselves” are very small by comparison.

Nickit steal from other people and their lore emphasizes ill behavior. Nuzleaf intentionally fuck with people for the hell of it. The only one that doesn’t fit “evil” that you listed is Absol, which is dark type because it’s seen as a bringer of destruction by people- a bad omen, but certainly in the minority of the typing.

I could list others like Bisharp or Zarude but you get the picture.

Dark as a theme revolves more around pack animals and “criminal gangs” hence why they are used by the bad guys. Their moveset reflects this too- Beat Up, Quash, Assurance. Solitary dark types *do* exist but they’re comparatively much fewer- Darkrai, Crawdaunt, A-Persian if you want to know a couple. Weavile like >>50572521 said is a good example of the type for this reason.

The purest psychic type in concept is Reuniclus. Its actual physical form is as vestigial as possible, like one big brain cell.

The most ghost pokemon is also pretty clearly Spiritomb, what with being a swirling vortex of pure spectral energy and canonically made of multiple disembodied souls.

Finally I'd have nominated Tangrowth for the most grass type.

The only themes Darkrai really shares with dark types are that it’s colored black and is a social outcast, honestly. You can find better examples. Murkrow/Honchkrow probably would be a better fit considering it conveys the criminal theme many dark types have, in addition to everything else.

Correct, which is why you go for the “best fit”, i.e. what has the most in common with the majority of what is is supposed to represent. Aka the point of this thread. Darkrai doesn’t fit the majority of dark in comparison to other choices, no matter how much you try to stretch it. I already addressed Absol, too, read the post again. Dark encompasses a variety of themes and Darkrai only scratches the surface when weighted next to others.

Nah golem are a worse pick than op's 3. You could swap Geodude with Onix but geodude is a great choice. Vaporeon is a great choice for water, but meowth is a stupid choice for normal, I'd say herdier is much better.
