So, any theories on what the hell is happening in this sequence of clips? It's clearly hinting at a battle gimmick and/or how gyms work.

The best I can come up with is that there looks to be a Ground vs. Fire theme going on in this battle, perhaps you can pick a type to tie to your trainer/team that gives certain bonuses and special abilities.
