Never been to Ukraine, but I have been to a lot of Russian cities like Moscow, SPB, Novosib, Kazan and nowhere did anybody care for stuff like Nintendo.
A Russian region wouldn't sell in Russia itself, why bother with this shit.

Some do, but Pokemon is the last thing you'll ever see an actual Russian person playing. It's non existent in Russia.
Russia is a poor country, there is no profit for GameFreak here, people who even bother with games mostly play PC battle simulators, Pokemon is too anime-styled to ever appeal to a Russian gaming crowd, it wouldn't even register on the radar

Russia itself is a fucking massive country. And with that comes a lot of beautiful landscapes and biomes.

Tundras, forests, the arctic, taigas, the steppe... not to mention Lake Baikal, the major river systems, mountain ranges...

The game would be best if GF focused on the geography and open areas and less on the cities.

It doesn't translate into love for the Pokemon brand in particular.
The popular animes are stuff like Tokyo Ghoul, Jujutsu Kaisen, Future Diary and other "edgy" stuff since most of the anime audience is 15~30 "hipster" crowd.
Nobody who watches anime in Russia is ever gonna buy a console, a Pokemon game, subscriptions, Pokemon cards all that official franchise shit.

It seems you don't really understand that the majority of people in Russia, even anime watchers, are rather poor people who barely pay the apartment rent.

For starter pokemon I'd assume one to be the Arctic Fox and another to be a flower like the fern leaf peony or sacred lotus. I'd be mad if they didn't add the Siberian Tiger or Eurasian Lynx either.
