I GUESS you could sanitize it and have an environmental message with the big city towns you go to being especially filthy but in like, a sanitized way.
But then we are adults and yearn for something more, and shouldn't be slumming around in Pokemon because we are simply too old for it, clearly.
You want something that scratches that "I have a supernatural/magical creature friend in a semi realistic setting" read those books by Jim Butcher with magical familiar spirits that are elemental and shit.
People get stabbed and shit, occasionally. There is a pseudo Roman setting for it. It's much grittier than Pokemon.
It's also by Jim Butcher so it's pretty good without necessarily being the best thing written ever. (I like him but will admit he has substantial faults.)
