I absolutely hate Gen 5, easily my least favorite generation by a mile for millions of reasons (all of which have no doubt been repeated to death by other detractors over the years), but I totally agree with you OP. I don’t let my later feelings cloud my earlier ones, I was never more excited for the series than when I saw the Zekrom/Reshiram cover art reveal, and coming back every day to see the mixture of fake and real leaks was awesome. Gen 5 wasn’t what I wanted, but anyone who tries to downplay its hype season is a fool.
If I had to rank the other hype seasons after Unova I’d say 7 > 3 > [9 thus far] > 8 (SwSh and DLC) > 6 >>> 4 >>> 8 (BDSP and PLA hype season), and then the first 2 gens were already released when I became a fan of the games so I can’t rank those hype seasons, though I couldn’t imagine Gen 1 had one.
