That's not what hotseat means. Hotseat is turn-based in-person multiplayer, and originally referred to games that allowed multiple players, but on a different device users would have to take turns using (thus the "hot seat" being the chair still warmed by the previous player's ass). The term has also been used to refer to games with multiple input devices but still being turn-based, like Super Mario Bros or Mario Party. It doesn't refer to multiplayer games with simultaneous play, even when all players are in the same room.

From the trailer, it looks like you're just both playing in the same world at the same time. You can probably chat with each other and possibly trade with each other from anywhere. I doubt they'll bother to include anything more complex than that.

Co-op mode will be a shitshow. Remember Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Remember how terrible getting people together was? You had to wait for every single visit and departure, as in the game paused and you had to watch a fucking cutscene every time.

Pokemon has always been built around connectivity, and there used to be a ton of multiplayer incentives between Gen 4 - 6.

Platinum had the Underground, Wi-Fi Plaza and even co-op at the Battle Frontier. You earn more Battle Points for winning with friends than you do when playing with Riley, Cheryl, etc. XY had O-Powers where you can share bonuses with friends from the PSS (which itself was fairly intuitive as an interface). ORAS updated Secret Bases where you could share them over Wi-Fi. BW2 had the Entralink Missions where you go would hunt for items together in the overworld.

I fucking miss it all.

The switch is the most normie console since the wii, possibly even moreso since the wii and ds already did the leg-work of making gaming popular amongst the general population rather than strictly kids and nerds, plus covid made a lot of people get into gaming and the switch is the cheapest modern console and has a fuckton of casual games and ports of popular titles on top of nintendo's massive exclusive ip's. Pokemon in particular is a console seller, hence the switch lite launching alongside swsh.

at this point paying for online is the gaming standard, sucks but it is what it is, at least I'm only paying 20 a year.

I only play video games to socialize with my friends. I give zero shits about the game itself and would never enjoy a singleplayer experience because that's for incel loser nerds with no friends. All games should have co-op but also not be balanced for it so it's braindead easy because I don't want to have to think when I'm socializing. I love Elden Ring on PC with the full co-op mod btw! Now I can finally play the game the way it should be!
