Black and White were the worst-selling first releases in a generation.
Of course it sold millions. It's a fucking Pokemon game, that much is guaranteed. But it sold fewer millions than any other Pokemon game.

Ok then, let me meet you on your logic then. How do you make a game that's actually balanced around having all of those features at once and still have the room to include new things that actually feel fresh and useful? Why would you ever use Z-Moves when Dynamax existed for example.

The gen special combat changes shouldve started and ended with Mega Evo's, and by that I mean they should have never abandoned them, Z-moves are fine, but come on, Dynamaxing is just... no thanks, I really hope they don't try another weird gimmick in SV if theyre never going back to Mega's

What needs to be balanced about following mons, Frontier, berries, the radar, and the Pokeathlon? No one wanted Z moves or Dynamax when they had Megas as an already perfect concept. They just added bloat for no reason.

Bruh, what are you smoking. The lion's share of them went to mons that were already powerful enough to hack it as is and the rest ended up either stupidly broken to compensate or were literal wastes of a team slot. GF immediately knew they fucked up with the concept which is why they only very quietly included it in Gen VII.

Concept, not execution. It's the best way to communicate bonds between trainer and pokemon while also giving new life to older mons. It was very flawed, but it should've been developed further

Pokemon since Gen 5 has been more focused on human character developments and drama, so I dunno where people get this idea that the game failed. We're on the exact same trajectory that those games started. Linear, story driven JRPG.

The main reason was also the biggest selling point for a lot of people: The Region Lock. Until you hit post-game, you were using exclusively Unovamons. And doing this after HG/SS brought a ton of nostalgia seeking folks back to Pokemon was a big gamble. They saw it and how nothing was familiar despite sharing the name and turned their noses up.

This seems to be mostly a Western response though, B/W did gangbusters out in Japan since they loved the idea of the region lock and the growing of the plot and characterization, continuing Gen IV's focus on it. Maybe it was because they had more exposure to PokeSpe since B/W really feels like the manga as an actual game at points.

Timing of release On the surface this was just another DS game after a whole plethora of DS games. Pokemon has been called stale for 20 years because the formula was fundamentally unchanged. Gen 5 didn't do anything to improve that reputation, apart from replacing Chansey with Audino I guess.

I like BW in retrospect, but as someone who was probably the chief demographic when it released (early/mids teens), it just didn't hit. Marketing wasn't very good, the removal of all previous gens made it alien and strange, and it just didn't look like pokemon. Also the constantly moving sprites, no matter how much people here praise it, always struck me as jarring and I personally can't stand it.

I have many friends, and I've quite seen a few unopened Black/White games. It was a bold decision, and again, in retrospect I think it was good, but from a monetary standpoint is was risky and not a sound idea.

The only reason you think otherwise is because Mega's did their job and increased the viability of almost all of these pokemon

I'm still mad they still discarded Megas even though almost 10 years later and no main game and they are still the most popular. They are in GO, Masters, the anime, hell they are still getting merchs to this day still. It was such a dumb move to get rid of them especially because their other gimmicks either no one cared about like Z-Moves or they barely bothered with them like D/GMax. Makes me think there's a huge discrepancy between TPC and GF but no one cares because the money is rolling in.
