Some early art work seems to put him with either Chikorita or totodile (it’s one where he’s exploring ruins of Alph wirh Whitney) and In the HGSS a totodile is with him, Chikorita is with Lyra and Cyndaquil is just doing it’s own thing.
And this the recent artwork he’s with croconaw (though that could just be because he was surfing in lake of rage at the time and totodile is the water type starter)
Though the manga has always had Gold with Typhlosion, and there was that Legend of Thunder special.
