He's admitted that he buys the pokemon games for pretty much the same reason anyone else his age buys them. Game Freak basically got into kids heads at an early age and as much as people complain about the games, it's too ingrained in their minds to not at least want to play the games. Anyone who says pokemon games are as good as other rpgs that come out are just coping.
