Being the first game letting you tackle gyms in any order alone will make it sell, if the multiplayer is actually a multiplayer and not just ghosts running around the map that’ll add even more. It could be absolutely shit but it’ll still sell, I had a friend who I didn’t even know played Pokémon ask me which one I was getting so he could get the opposite version.

The most likely reason would be it being the second Pokémon generation within a console generation. Look at >>50651094. Notice how GS, BW, & SM sold less, or as much in SM's case, compared to RGB, DP, & XY.
Other reasons would be release fatigue with BDSP & PLA a few months ago and some of the people who bought SWSH regretting it after playing.
Even if it does sell as well as SWSH, I too have a feeling that it'll be even worse received. They're going to mess up big time somewhere.

I get the feeling the school uniform will at the very least be like the gym challenger uniform where you'll be forced to wear it for certain battles. If you're representing your school in some kind of tournament being required to wear your school uniform in certain battles would make sense.

Horrendous artstyle plus second generation game in same console plus doesn't seem to be implement Arceus' improvements plus doesn't have swooshie first "real" console Pokemon game.
Also it feels like a "filler" generation" between Gen 10 and 35 coming up at practically the same time too.

If they actually try to spice up the formula and end up making an actual good game not just a "good pokemon game", I can see it flopping since so much of the fanbase is literally brain dead.

Its a pokemon game it won’t outright flop as assuming it’ll get DLC in 2023 then it will have the Pokémon brand (which is in a much better state in brand recognition than back in the gen 4 and 5 days thanks to go bringing the mobile crowd in), switch effect and no third version undercutting sales.

But I think it’s unlikely to reach SWSH numbers (not impossible but unlikely) as SWSH had two other factors carrying that miserable pile of trash such as holding the title of being the first proper traditional console title that fully transitioned the series onto consoles (and by extension the first new gen in a console and previous trends shows that a second gen on the same platform doesn’t usually outperform the first anyway) and the covid factor boosting sales further than normal since games helped kill time during lockdowns. S/V doesn’t have those factors helping it and might be in a bit of a disadvantage because of Pokémon fatigue thanks to legends and BDSP but then again legends did well as a stand-alone entry, in a dead month and fuck all marketing so what do I know.
