There are a couple of bad designs in Gen 1, but Venusaur isn't one of them.

To be fair, when when Gen 1 first came out Victreebel and Exeggutor were both way better than venusaur.
It’s not that venusaur has never been outclassed it’s that he’s been consistently getting better while zard and blastoise (if you ignore megas) just kinda stagnate.

Frogs are amphibians, but there's a reason why they are what they are; I can try and dig it up but there was an interview where they claimed it was because lots of Japanese kids would find frogs, lizards, and turtles in nature and keep them as "pets."

Red's original name is Satoshi after Satoshi Tajiri.
When they assigned Bulbasaur to him they weren't considering colors.

He was renamed to Red in Gen2 for marketing purposes.
