Do you want to satiate your gambling urge, want to complete a set, or just want to have fun? Open packs
If you want specific cards of Pokemon or characters, specific rarities, or harder to acquire chase cards, buy singles
If you don't like any Pokemon passed Generation 3, buy Wizards of the Coast Pokemon cards (sometimes colloquially known as 'vintage')
If you do like Pokemon passed Generation 3, enjoy different textures and rarities, look at the set lists of some recently released sets (colloquially called 'modern') and see what you're interested in
I will say that a lot, A LOT has changed since you stopped collecting in 1999. The art, pattern and textures on "holos" are insane now. Surely you remember Base Set Charizard. Well get a load of pic related. And this isn't even a full art (cards that are holo on the entire surface of the card), which is a whole other can of worms
Either way, do some research, find some cards you think look cool, and don't let anyone in here bring you down for buying a certain type of card that they don't agree with. You'll learn what I mean if you continue this hobby/thread. Have fun, anon
