The main character fundamentally could not promote the new main mechanic of the generation, and thus they had to make Alain and the Mega Evolution Specials.
But that wasn't enough either, the fact is Ash was going to tango with trainers that did have Mega Evolution, and he'd be at a severe disadvantage unless they significantly downplayed Megas, which would be awful for marketing.
THAT'S why Ash-Greninja even exists. And it shot Greninja's lasting appeal as a whole in the foot all the more when they went too far on powertripping while not at all making it apparent to people the "Ash can't win a League Tournament or the show has to end forever" mandate was still in place for XY.
Cue BURASTO, cue the seethe, cue that going poorly for GameFreak implementing Ash-Greninja in Gen 7, and now Greninja is nothing more than a headache for TPC and they don't want it to be featured positively anymore in any ongoing media (games, anime, etc.) unless it's to suck another shillmon's cock (like Lucario) so no one remembers Ash-Greninja.
