The Eevee user himself is now married and is more worried about adult responsibilities than battling.
The reason it stuck out was how the big theme of the quest was how the word of pokemon isn't quite as fantastical as it appears, most people just grow out of Pokemon battles and get real jobs.
After you beat them, and then him, he gives you the eevium and says he's retiring from battles then goes back to his usual NPC dialogue, which was also kind of unsettling.
