At GameFreak they really and unironically believe their hands are made of gold and are gifted geniuses of videogame development because of Pokémon's incredible success since 1996. Because they have their lives and finances in perfect condition they really ignore the fact that all teir other projects fail and live in absolute denial of any criticism rised against their newer decissions, while attributing the success of their golden goose to their talent.
In reality their success comes from Pokémon only, not their talent. Pokémon is successful "despite" Game Freak, no because of Game Freak. It is a combination of great marketing in the 90's, huge nostalgia value, huge addictive value to collecting, Nintendo's continuous support, and fans keeping the community alive with fan art, fan theories, fan fictions, fan battling simulators, fan designs, fan games, fan gameplay rules, fan everything.
