you could say that for long running series of just about anything, prime example being Half-Life Alyx being no different that fanfiction, even when it retconned the ending to the last part of EP2
you could also say that Tajiri's departure means that the games have been fanfiction since 2002 (someone will unironically believe this idea here too)

It will be interesting to see what Masuda does with TPCi instead of GameFreak. For the longest time, he was someone that wanted to push features in just the games that work well with communication and playing together. Being with TPCi now that might give him more resources outside of just Game Freak to try certain things. In all honesty, I'm hopeful for this change because as much as people like to blame Masuda for recent things, the reality is that there are a lot of things that has probably had ideas about that he hasn't really been able to fully realize. While I do not like Pokemon GO for example, it was my understanding that it was primarily him who worked with Niantic to get that going, and we all know what that did for the series in terms of connectivity and game interaction.

He's there since it was 10 lads in a rented flat and aside from HGSS (which he didn't even concentrate on as he was working on Gen 5's battle engine at the same time), he's not shown ANY interest in taking more of visible role in the studio, just content to play around with gimmicks and making Charizard better in battle.

Anything that Satoshi Tajiri didn't direct is fanfiction.
Having said that, the franchise will be much better off without Masuda's outdated way of thinking, and Turner's horrible designs. Galar easily had the worst starters of the franchise.

Yes he is for implementing that god-awful battle timer in recent games and making shit battle/balance decisions. People don't play these games well enough to know where the real issues are it seems.

It was pretty close with gen 5, tapered off with 6, then went full-tilt with 7 and it's been downhill ever since.
You literally cannot distinguish fanfiction with canon anymore.
