I never neglected the rest of my team in favor of overleveling my starter. I didn't know that was optimal and I knew training your own team was the appeal of the game

On the contrary, I never felt the need as a kid to try and level up six pokemon simultaneously. I gravitated towards overleveling my starter because it just made more sense

I played optimally as a kid and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Starter + 3 or 4 legendaries is based. These days I really only play for waifumons so I do full teams.

as a kid I never used TMs because when the game said "one time use" I thought this meant I could only use the move once, period.

I'm similar. I beat the whole game with just a Blastoise. I think I caught maybe two other Pokemon, and used Oddish once(?). My goal was just to beat the game and nothing else.
