Ash/Satoshi has always been a stand-in for the player anon. Figures he wins the League when there's no reason to not have him claim the win.
That's why it's so hilarious to see XYgotes claim the backlash gave him the win, the backlash hadn't started when Game Freak planned the PC to become the first-ever Alolan Champion.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the anime writers would’ve gone with Hau, Kukui, or even Ryuki as the champion, then the cry backlash made them realize this was their chance to give ash a win without it breaking the formula too much.
