A few routes at the end of the game is bad postgame.
Repeatable high difficulty challenge modes (battle frontier) good postgame.
Postgame isn't just making the game a bit longer, is about what you do for the rest of your 300 hour playtime after you finish the league in 20 hours

Which ones? Lumiose City alone is physically larger and more detailed than other capital cities. Routes are sometimes more multilayered since it's 3D. >>50735141 Like the swamp underneath the bridge on Route 18, or Route 8 having a cliffside walk with the beach down below. Route 15/16 is one massive route with multiple planes and the Lost Hotel underground.

Maybe Sinnoh comes close with Mt. Coronet, or Hoenn with its water routes.

Honestly in Pokemon's case it's just that all games from DP to USUM are not significant improvements over Gen 3, when G3 was over G2 and G2 was over G1
so when in other franchises it's obvious the newer games are better, it's just... not the case for Pokémon. I hope SV finally serves as a Gen 4 for the series

I think that having extra things to do is nice. Postgame is great because it is presented as strictly optional and doesn't need to follow the standard of the main campaign. You can add a weird facility that might not be the most accessible, but because it's on the end game only the people who want it need to bother with it.

Anon, people have historically creamed over post-game content because it's a reward for beating the game and it's "new" and lets be fucking real for a moment - if battle frontier was there before post-game it'd have less people playing because the elite four and legendaries and gym battle are what the game is about - once all of that is out of the way more people are willing to do other content. Post-game is where battle frontier should rightfully be to enable more user interaction

You have to compare it to a game like Skyrim that has a main quest but a lot of other things to do in the meantime that you can create your own story mode from sidequests alone. I don't think mere pasttime facilities would cut it.

Pokemon doesn't have sidequests, tasks that are detached from the main story. Everything that happens that can't be boiled down to a facility has to be integrated into the flow of the main plot.

Pokemon uses postgame for content that had nothing to do with the main story leading up to the Champion battle.

Quite literally it would change the way players look at it. The Frontier is supposed to be a challenge and mastery of the mechanics of the game. Making postgame facilities available at the start of even midgame would be silly (see SwSh DLC Tundra legendaries before 1st gym). Giving the player a whole game to experience and learn before giving access to the challenge modes is general good game design. It's why you don't go straight to Darker Side of Mario Odyssey 20 minutes after booting up the game; there's still tons to learn and even the challenge modes themselves offer new mechanics to learn that simply aren't in base game content.

The basedjack is right though, Hoenn would be better if those routes were postgame only. It would make it feel as if the adventure continues and the secrets of mirage island and the regis would have more intrigue behind them, and the abandoned ship would be kino if it was actually challenging with high level trainers and wild pokemon
