There's two versions to sell so of course you'll see more copies.

Meanwhile PLA, while being a single game was only beat up in that category by Yellow(which had two releases in addittion of being Gen 1) and beat the remakes of the first generation alone.
Pretty well, at least if you're one of those who think a game selling more copies means it sold better.

BDSP was released first and just in time for the holidays.
PLA was not and in fact will never have a holiday season to itself.
GF crippled PLA's sales in every way possible, a weak release date, multiple games cannibalizing its sales, barely any marketing to itself.
The fact that it still sold as well as it did is impressive.

BDSP had the benefit of the Black Friday Profit Zone and Dual Packs.
PLA had neither, but it's still impressive PLA actually sold in the first place; Enough for the two Sinnoh Games combined to outsell SWSH.

Also take into consideration the time of year both released and the fact that BDSP is still in ORAS and LGPE territory of sales despite being on the Switch which has done wonders for the sales of other Pokemon games, notably SWSH that sold some 23-24m and that certainly wasn't due to quality. BDSP underperformed while they did everything they could to handicap PLA, almost like they wanted to prove something about the popularity.

I do wonder just how much Christmas sales affect overall sales. A lot of parents buy their kids a Pokemon game for Christmas every year, while ignoring the games otherwise.

What really matters is what the sales are after you factor in the holiday sales boost. Sadly that's kind of difficult to do since we don't know how high that sales boost is.

The anime doesn’t care about Gen 8 mons, unironically. Outside of Sirfetch’d and Dracovish the only ones with any presence, or allowed to be cool in general, are Cinderace, Inteleon, and Urshifu.
