I saw more hype for the fucking Alola leauge than this M8 shit. At least people were talking good about the animation back then. At least that one ended up subverting expectations. Right now, there's quite literally nothing hype. The animation is confirmed to be shite, the writing is as usual PM writing (aka hot garbage), none of the characters had much build up to them besides maybe Cynthia and Iris and even the matchups are already disappointing. Not to mention no reserves and Ash's horrible current team

Can't be Leon, Cynthia is for round 2, already had a match with Alain and Iris, Leon has been seen on screen losing

I think the difference is this show's format. It's this series of loosely connected adventures in whatever Region of the day. When before the Pokemon League was the conclusion to a 3-4 year journey.
