I think it suffered the same fate as Johto anime, when a major plot point was cancelled and the series lost its point, also resorting to endless filler.

Isn't Giovanni dead? Like, I'm pretty sure, he got shot in the head in Season 16 and Sonic and the bros had to take down some bizarre genetically engineered Pokemon (not Mewtwo) that looked straight out of Resident Evil. Giovanni is also Ash's dad.
