Because they have to "make up" for Ash's prior league losses first.
Ash beat Iris which is close enough to beating the Unova League already, now he'll beat Steven to fully cement he can mog the Hoenn League after he made a joke out of Wallace, then he'll beat Cynthia to make up for Tobias.
Meanwhile Leon mogs Alain and Diantha, and by merit of Ash mogging Leon, he'll "make up" for his Kalos League Loss because he beat the guy who beat the guy who beat him AND Kalos' Champion.

Why would they feature Ash VS Iris twice in Journeys? There's nothing new they can do aside from Iris' dumbass gimmick, but that won't mean shit to Ash because he's running on Plot Armor that requires him to reach the finals in order to face Leon.

These tournament brackets suck, but can be fixed with one simple switch.

Switch Lance and Cynthia, and it suddenly becomes massively better.

They're explicitly avoiding Charizard VS Charizard (Leon's using G-Max Rillaboom to mog Mega Zard X, even) and Ash isn't bringing back any of his old Pokemon for this.
It's gonna cap off with Pikachu VS Charizard, there's no other way around it. Two characters that are literally identical in personality and love for Pokemon, it only makes sense it's Starter against Starter.

Nah. Current setup is fine. Ash gets to fight Steven, Cynthia, and Leon, aka the strongest champions. The others aren’t interesting. Lance is a jobber, Ash already fought Iris, Alain is to show Leon’s power level, and the IKU Z that lost to Alain (who lost to Leon in 2 moves lol) had already kept up with Diantha even before Ash had mastered it.
