What's even more insulting is that they were actually doing a decent job at setting up Ash's eventual downfall: whenever he was supposed to be training, he'd get distracted and dick around. At least half his badges were either from luck, or doing something unrelated to battling, (ffs he didn't even battle Giovionni, just Team Rocket again). Then they introduce Ritchie who's basically Ash if he were more serious about training. This was an easy set up for an classis "work hard" moral.
However, then they go out of their way to make Ash lose due to unfair bullshit that wasn't his fault.

Fuck even when Ash tries to be a good sport and congratulate Ritchie, its obvious Ritchie wasn't happy and hta the didn;t want to win this way.
