This anime made me realize the games shouldn't have a straight adaptation. It was dull at its best and dogshit at its worst. The ashnime did things right by not being accurate at all.

First couple of seasons were good because of that. It was its own world filled with random cities that actually lived up to what you'd imagine they were in game and it made clear it wasn't a videogame animated.

i think the point is you can have a dumb, hasty Ash-like character who can also accomplish stuff

isn't the excuse for Ash being a massive loser something like they would "have" to end his journey, hence why team rocket still exists, why he doesn't catch em all, and why he loses championships? if true then it sounds like the anime team is just creatively bankrupt

That used to be the case, but backlash from Kalos (largely in part due to how much of a Shonen Gary Stu-wannabe they made Ash via Greninja that fired people up all the more because it was all for naught) told them to finally concede on that "if Ash wins a League Tournament, the anime has to end entirely" mandate.
He proceeded to win Alola, and now he's on his way to become the literal world's strongest trainer by taking on the current strongest, Leon.

First season+orange league are a good arc for him.
He's just a newbie and the indigo league shows him fucking up because he simply didn't bother much.
Come orange leangue championship, he does proper teambuilding and actively tries to win against and extremely good team (for gen 1 standards).

Except barely anything of Origins Red feels compelling. He's carried by basic bitch shonen staple of shouting his fiery heart out and screaming for his LIZARDON to smash its way with brute force and zero ingenuity because he's the protagonist thus has to win. From episode 1-4 he feels no less than a total noob at pokémon training. Heck this OVA feels somewhat worse at certain parts for the little comedy and weak cast.

I'd say it's just stoic mimes make for boring protagonists. It's missing some characterization, character interactions, and some humor and SoL shit in the middle. The games don't have those because 1. they're fucking games, not movies, and 2. the player is supposed to fill the shoes of the protagonist

can't show the protagonist being serious, confident, and overcompetent, or else they stop being relatable. kids do dumb shit all the time so it makes sense to make a kid protagonist a bit of an immatture klutz.

He literally only won because he sent out SHILLZARD and that reminded Giovanni that he, too as a child had a charmanderino and started questioning his entire life and why he made team rocket. It distracted him from the battle and he won.
Red was on his last legs against Giovanni in Origins, and had it not been for Giovanni's memories of his charmanderino, he would've stomped Red.
Red didnt make Giovanni disband Team Rocket, charmanderino did

Nice thread Boomer. Not that Ash is a great character but:
Ash has surpassed every rival and is currently competing for the title of World’s Strongest Trainer
He’s defeated Team Rocket at every turn as well as other villainous organisations. He’s also a Champion as well as having completed the Battle Frontier challenge and has caught several Ultra Beasts and a Mythical.
The only one of these Origins Red outdoes Ash in is catching Pokemon, but even then, Red’s only particularly great Mon is his Zard, Ash’s Mon are ironically much better balanced.
