Remember that the gen 3 roxanne will always be the superior version and that the gen 6 version fails at the job of being a first boss.

Reminder that they're both superior to her Emerald version, which gives you two Geodudes for some reason. I really don't like it when early Gym Leaders rock multiple of the same Pokemon. With the same moves, no less.

The character design of the new version is trying way too hard, Look at the way the new design is portrayed. It's got this childish expression on the face which makes it look like she's not taking the job seriously at all which isn't a good look for someone who's supposed to be your introduction to gym leader battles, in comparison to the much more composed gen 3 design. ORAS also ruins her personality by making her a lot more hot headed as well in the original provided via external sources you can get glimpses of the type of person that Roxanne actually was. The way the new design looks is that it was made to appeal to a specific demographic first rather than actually being an effective character for the position of a first gym leader.

I agree with you. She looks way too serious and bratty in the remakes. While in gen 3 there's something maternal about her.

They nerfed her pretty hard, especially considering it's even easier to level up in ORAS than it is in RS.
Geodude at least benefits from being guaranteed one hit.

Considering her title has always been the Rock Loving Honors Student, that sounds more like a failing of her original design than one of her newer one.

It's less that it was retconned and more just outright expanded. Her only semblance of personality in Gen 3 was she graduated from school and immediately became a strong trainer. That's it. Even when you call her in Emerald it's just her talking about being a strong trainer. There's nothing else to her.

In emerald her self-introduction literally says that being the leader of the gym bears responsibility. Something which you can't really see in the new design because of the cartoonish depiction. You can easily tell that's she's a responsible and disciplined person judging by the sprite alone The artwork also shows her being far more restrained as well as being more modest in her choice of clothing as well. While in the remake it looks like she's parodying said qualities.

That's an incredible reach. Literally every job, no matter how unimportant, bears responsibility. That's like saying her personality is that she's a Gym Leader, which is to say she doesn't have a personality in that case. It's fine if you like her old design more, but just say you like it more because you like it more. You don't have to invent some crazy reach to justify it. People are allowed to like and dislike things on whims.

And again I'm saying the new design doesn't fit as a first boss because it's doesn't even convey that right. It's the simple things that make the OG design better overall because the new design doesn't fit as a first gym leader. It's basic visual storytelling.

Roxanne's redesign ain't the only one I dislike. Wallace, Courtney(The design itself is better than the original but I don't like it, mainly cause I really dislike the personality thrown onto her), Maxie, Steven, May and Brendan.
