Are you one of those players who catch only 6 Pokémon per game and stays with those 6 till the end? Or do you catch a wide selection of Pokémon for specific battles

Yes, aside from maybe early route filler that gets swapped out when I find something I actually want to use. I'm too impatient for grinding more than 6 pokemon during a main game playthrough.

OR was also the only time I couldn't decide the sixth member so threw on Groudon as a power fantasy.

I generally play through with a few core members but constantly rotate the other half or 2/3 of my party to fill out the dex (mainly for first playthrough in games with Exp Share/All).

I catch usually around 12 to 15 mons depending on how many of my favorites are in each game, then rotate out the team after every gym. I also play with permadeath to encourage myself to play better, and if I'm not playing gen 1, 3, or 4, I box my starter.

For vanilla games generally I stick with six mons. And if I switch something out to replace it with another, it's usually a permanent replacement. For difficulty romhacks I might have more mons, like 8-10 main ones by the late game, and rotate them out for XP and for certain gym battles where I want to use a different team strategy. It's also a lot easier to do this in later games where you can get easy XP via gen 5 audinos, gen 6 exp share, etc.

I know it's autistic to care about how other plays the game, but it enrages me to see players who use a lot of pokemon on rotation. You can only switch team members if your wanted pokemon is late game, and even that isn't recommend. I guess it grinds my gears since it is the new direction GF pushes for with the forced exp share. And people just go with it...

All the replayabillity the games have for me is the option to use different team every time. I don't see how the rotation people play the game more then once.

The former, tho I get the feeling that the latter is the intended playstyle. Personally I just hate using more than 6 mons in a playthrough because it means I need to split the time I spend using some of my bros. I'd rather just keep my whole squad on me at all times, it just feels more natural.

My first goal in a game to to catch 6 different Pokemon as quickly as possible. From there I try to find Pokemon that are better than my current team, or try to find Pokemon of varying types for better type coverage.

I tend to catch new Pokemon whenever possible to see what they're capable of. Older gen mons you basically know what to expect out of them already.

That isn't a "new" direction that GF is pushing, that's the direction the games were always intended to have and it's mostly overseas players who don't adhere to it. They've had actual interviews expressing their utter confusion on why you'd only use 6 monsters in a monster raising game that offers hundreds, it's a phenomena entirely unique to Pokemon within the genre and only a subset of its players at that.

Part of it I feel is the unwillingness to adapt. You build a team and learn how it functions and any changes you make could mess up your current team's synergy. And alot of people like to use only their absolute favorite Pokemon. Some people will also make it a personal rule to only use a game's new Pokemon when it's possible.

I also suspect not using more Pokemon is due to many casuals being overwhelmed by all the options and sticking with what they got early.

I try to mix things up and try out new Pokemon I haven't used before. But oftentimes I still end up sliding back towards old favorites. For example, tentacruel. Especially when the game requires me to use a pokemon with surf for getting around the game world, so I need a special attacking water type anyway. And tentacruel is just too fucking good. Good bulk, decently varied moveset, fucking toxic spikes, etc.

Another one I always find myself using is clefable. Magic guard is GOAT and it's so versatile. You can do a calm mind + stored power special tank. You can do a life orb mixed attacker. You can do belly drum physical sweeper. You can pretty much fit it on any team. And it only got better with fairy typing.

I only use 6, but I try to space them out so my team isn't complete until near the end of the game. I usually have 2 pokemon by the first gym, 4 by the 4th gym and a full team by the 7th.

Nah. First, there is a difference between seeing a new cool mon late game and replacing a team member, and having a team of a lot of pokemon on rotation. Also, you have a cool team and then you see a new cool mon? Then next time trade for it early or plan your team accordingly. I do admit that unless I trade over an egg, I usually try to ignore pokemon in 7th-8th gym area.

My playthroughs end up taking an obscene amount of time to get through the main game (around 50 hours), but it's comfy to be able to play/level at my own pace

Used to be 6 mons only 90% of my life (i.e. up until Sword and shield). Gen 8 and the stupid open area made me want to catch and use different mons, I got addicted to typing advantage fighting the gyms (which is hard to work around with only 6 of the same mons for all gyms).

Depending on the game I'll usually have a final team idea in mind but keep a team of 6 and rotate my final guys in as I find them. For my first Shield playthrough I used my starter and one of my favorite mons that hadn't been dexcut and then filled the dex as I went along, swapping out mons as they fully evolved unless I felt like I just had to have them on my team. I'm probably going to do the same thing when I start up Violet.

Since XY, I usually use around 9-12 Pokémon for most of the game (especially the first half), and maybe eventually narrow it down to 6-8 in the endgame. The only games since XY I can remember having a set team of 6 for most of the game are ORAS and maybe LGPE

Unless I'm playing the game on launch, I always like to plan out my team beforehand, so in the end I only end up switching Pokémon very rarely, if I see that one of the Pokémon I had planned to use just wasn't good enough. Though this often means that for most of the game I won't have a full team, but it's fun to strategize around this issue. I think it also lets me fully appreciate a Pokémon, as I get to use it for a full playthrough.

I've kept a personal dex of like 6-8 Pokemon per gen that I've kept actively since gen 3. My gen 2 team is from Soul Silver and my gen 1 team was a recreation from my blue version team transferred via virtual console on the 3DS. I saw Ash do that on tv as a kid so that's pretty much what I do, I only catch/use the best and the absolute coolest.

I catch 6 to use on a team, the games legendaries and if there's a reason to catch more (HMs from Oaks Aide in R/B/Y/FR/LG) then i'll catch the amount I need for that. Also any shinies.

I don't think we argue the same point. For me every playthrough is unique since I use different pokemon. If I used a pokemon I get around the last gym, did I really "use" that pokemon? I don't think so. Since I want to use the pokemon as much as I can during main game, late game pokemon are irrelevant. Unless you trade of course which is really easy nowadays with Home.

That is a good point. But there is some level gap where type advantage wouldn't help. For example,the last time I played crystal I reached Red with a team of level 50s. But that is an extreme case. Anyway, I don't use items and play on set so being severely underleveled would be really hard, but using items can help a lot, so it really depends a lot on the playstyle.

Only time I'll permanently bench a teammate is when they just dont play ina. Way that I like or just start getting outperformed by everything around them.
Like Dustox isnt worth using past level 20 and Hariyama/Drifblim start falling off around level 30

When playing a new Pokemon entry, I stick exclusively to new Pokemon (Gen 6 Pokemon only in Kalos, Gen 7 Pokemon only in Alola, Gen 8 Pokemon only in Galar, etc). I catch the first six new Pokemon I find, and I only swap out if I find a new one that is more aesthetically pleasing to me.
Repeat playthroughs, I play basic nuzlocke rules to encourage new team compositions.

The modernized EXP Share is a blessing when it comes to teambuilding, so long as the game makes sure not to blatantly overlevel me like it did in Kalos.
