Yeah but it is balanced because the others Pokemon doesn't have a crazy movepool like in later gens. You are supposed to use TMs to bring your Pokemon to their full potential.

The usual "johto is full of shitmons" claim is widely exaggerated. That said, Yanma is just awful. Other than Unown, it's one of the worst FE pokemon in gen 2, competitively and even in a single player playthrough.

Not at the time of release. All regions have shitmons, and outside of outliers like Unown and Delibird, Johto's fully evolved pokemon weren't worse on average than other gens. Game Freak only started hating Johto later on by giving later gens perfectly optimized mons and giving Gen 1 mons broken overpowered buffs to compensate while giving Gen 2 mons nothing.

It only seems like Johto had alot of shitmons because Game Freak flooded the Gen 2 dex with worthless babies, so maybe they always hated Johto.

Ariados gets sludge bomb which alone makes it ok enough. Ledian gets screens and elemental punches. You get yanma much later, can catch it only on specific days and by that time you could already participate in bug catching contest and get much more useful bugs

You can get a metal coat as soon as you can fight Magnemites west of Ecruteak City, but yeah trading fucking sucks. Onix is fine for like the first 3 gyms, especially with the boosted exp though. Ledian immediately gets fucking rocked by the first gym and by the time you're at Bugsy it's already obsolete.

I think the only way to have shitmons in a playthrough naturally is to force you to start with them, have favorable type matchups in the first gyms, and few alternatives early on.

Or maybe even have team rocket steal your mons leaving you with crap bugs for a while.

Unova was the first time GF started actually thinking about competitive.
Bug-types were generally garbage before that because they were designed as the early-game type.
Finding out that people actually wanted to keep playing the game and play against other people made them start throwing more Pokemon bones, and bug-types got the best of it.

not only that but meganeura, which yanmega is obviously based on, was the first true airborne apex predator

there's literally zero reasons to make it a dragon type just because of the name

Butterfree gained access to sleep powder at lv 17 in gen 1 where sleep is completely overpowered
Not only that but the only 2 other pokemon who learn sleep powder at a similar level (oddish and bellsprout) are significantly slower than butterfree, every other pokemon only learns sleep powder at lv 40-something

not only that but it naturally learns confusion at an early level and can be taught psychic, having a very much respectable special stat to use it with

Butterfree is a pokemon you can legit use as part of your team for a long time
meanwhile nobody ever used ledian or ariados for anything because they are crap

Not really, ariados is a good bit bulkier and hits harder than Beedrill, and Ledian is faster than butterfree w/better coverage due to the elemental punches. They aren't strictly better but they do have their own seperate uses that beedrill and butterfree can't match

True, but we were talking about stat advantages. Starting from level 10 butterfree has 8 levels of stat advantage over ledyba before it evolves into ledian, butterfree gets confusion at level 10, which hits good enough with its 80 spA, meanwhile ledian at level 18 would only have tackle and comet punch, moves that are absolutely useless with its 35 attack. Ledian wouldn't have the access to elemental punches till the third badge, and by that time bug type usefulness already begin to wear off. Elemental punches wouldn't do enough damage with it's 55 spA unless they are super effective, which again, limits its usefulness even further.

Ariados is usable for what it is as long as you feed it some TMs as you go along. Ledian is nigh unsalvageable even against computer opponents, the one thing it can pull off is putting up shields and baton passing agility which is of questionable value when numerous other Pokemon set up screens far better and passing only a speed boost and nothing else isn't too useful... and imagine giving your Curse TM to this thing just so it can conceivably have a role in your party, my god.
Delibird has bad stats but at least it gets Ice Beam by TM. Unown is a meme and you know what you're getting into by training one. Really, there's a few mons here that mostly have the issue of very middling stats and mandatory TM use holding them back, but at least they're still usable unlike Ledian which is the standout why-would-you-ever monster in this list. I think Noctowl also is worth a mention as it's just worse than every other early bird mon outside of getting Hypnosis. I don't think the last three mons in the list deserve to be on it at all, actually. Girafarig's stats are almost good and it gets decent moves, Dunsparce pulls off paraflinch surprisingly well ingame, especially if you sacrifice your Curse TM, and Sunflora is a pretty average Grass type.

Heracross, Scizor, and Foretress were all really good. And Pinsir and Scyther were both decent. I'd say Gen 2 wasn't such a bad time for Bug Pokemon, relative to how many Pokemon existed in total. Gens 1 and 3, though, I would agree.

For in-game purposes, the big problem is that there just weren't any good Bug moves except Megahorn (which only one of them got). It's a sad state of affairs when you're relying on getting the right Hidden Power to have *any* sort of decent STAB.
