Hau is shown crying after losing to Ash in the anime and supplementary material tends to show alternate character traits though so I wouldn't be surprised if he was supposed to be more emotional about his losses. In-game though his flippant nature towards his losses, which one would think is just him trying not to show bitterness, honestly comes across more like apathy. I wish the modern games gave us more time to properly explore these arcs as Hau becomes a genuinely competent and impressive trainer, but I'd like to see the journey more through our interactions like Silver going from hitting you to genuinely respecting you and his team or Cheren trying to become the best, realising he can't, then eventually trying to bring out the best in the next generation.
