Gamefreak said Venusaur's design was so good they had to include him with Charizard as the poster boys of the original gen 1 games. I personally have always favored the Bulbasaur line HIGHLY. =)

Venusaur's definitely missing a certain something the other two have but I think that might be more of a flaw with the grass type as a whole than venu's fault specifically. Just doesn't have that "I want this on my animal fighting team" factor, and I'm struggling to think of a way they could've given it one without radically redesigning it or making it feel like another blastoise by making the flower into more of a cannon type thing.

People just lack imagination. That flower can do insane shit, shoot lasers, giant bursts of sleep powder and shit, leaf blades and vines that can power whip you and shit, just look at Ivysaur in smash and imagine a stronger version of all that shit and more. It isn't like a real flower that just sits there not doing anything, it's a magical swiss army knife of bullshit that Venusaur controls.

This. They should have just leaned more heavily on this aspect for how they showcase venusaur and leave wartortle's dragon turtle theme intact instead of forcing the cannons theme on squirtle.

Anyway, if Venusaur was not a bit of a old, sick blob (ie had kept the skin and eyes of its previous forms) it would clearly be the best of the three, but even in its current state it is better than blastoise, and the bulbasaur line remains the best pokemon line.
