Why is he considered the best GSC starter? Don't you get access to better watermons like Lapras and Gyarados? Like in RB Bulba is the best because of all the water types, the fact that you don't ever need a fire type and because Bulba is good vs every gym/elite 4 other than Sabrina, Blaine, Lorelai and Lance. Does Totodile really do anything the other water types don't?

Rage strats completely obliterating Falkner + extremely early evolution + wide for Gen 2 movepool + Good attacking stats + deceptively bulky + mono-water is great.
Also its competition is a support pea and fire rat that is crippled with lack of any proper coverage till final evo at level 36.

He's not the best GSC starter. He's actually the worst in Gen II. He's the best starter in HGSS since it has the physical-special split. With the introduction of Sheer Force Feraligatr in Gen 6, Feraligatr is without doubt the best of the Johto starters competitively.

lol no, blastoise and charizard are easily better, by the time you encounter water types you'll be so overleveled the type disadvantage won't matter

Charizard you can make a case for MAYBE because of the lack of any other good Fire types but Venusaur gets to take advantage of both the Toxic/Leech Seed glitch and Gen 1 crit mechanics. Venusaur is pretty handily the best Grass type in the game and almost certainly the best starter, unlike Blastoise that only outclasses Seaking.

Well, sure, but that's a pretty unfair standard to hold water-type starters to. How many water starters are really gonna be more useful than a Gyarados at level 20?

Vileplume is slow as fuck and its best move is Grass type Thrash. Victreebel is a perfectly fine option but Venusaur still outclasses it.

Water is just versatile type it only has 2 weaknesses, not a lot of stuff resists it, its good for clearing out caves and in gen 2 you can teach it ice punch very early in the game

Water type starters always have the downside of being water type the most plentiful type meaning its not hard to find a water type to use or to find a water type thats stronger than your starter, Gyarados being the biggest culprit of this since magikarp is so easy to find in everygame

You get a team of up to 6. The point to teambuilding is trying to cover each other's weaknesses and have as much advantage as possible. Most types have more than one weakness. That means you almost never need a specific type for anything, which means no starter is really better than the other two in-game. It's a matter of which one you like best.

The only thing stopping it from completely tearing the game apart is the relatively small special attack. Gyarados is technically better but Totodile is useful right from the start.

Bulba has a type advantage vs Brock and Misty that charizard has a disadvantage too. Bulba is good vs Geovanni, takes half damage vs Surge and due to retarded gen 1 AI is basically immune vs Koga and Erika. Sabrina is the only one it sucks to fight, and Blaine you get surf anyway. Bulba has the best special stat, which means he has the strongest attack of the 3 as all 3 attack off special and he has the best special defense of the 3 because special is 1 stat in RBY. Bulba has glitched as fuck moves too with razor leaf always critting and toxic and leach seed working on the same counter. His biggest issue is that you have to waste body slam tm on him because no strength access. What does charizard do better? He is even weak to flying in Gen 1 and is a mixed attacker with a special attack in the 80s. There is no reason to ever use a fire type in kanto with free ice beam and broken blizzard

against brock it takes too long to learn vine whip and against misty it doesn't matter because by the time you get to her your starter will be lv27-28 and types will stop mattering

The best GSC starter is Typhlosion, Feraligatr is held back by its moves mostly depending on its special attack while Typhlosion is just beating everything with Fire attacks and Thunderpunch. After the Physical Special split, Feraligatr is the strongest Johto starter, Typhlosion can no longer rely on Thunderpunch (though Thunderpunch is no longer a TM you can buy early in HGSS anyway) and Feraligatr gets buffed with Waterfall, Crunch, and Ice Fang.

Totodile soloes the game easier than the other two starters while also giving you access to some useful HM's for movement that aren't horrible in combat against literal NPC's either (Strength and Surf). And then for coverage it has Ice Punch/Ice Beam which, despite working off the worse attacking stat, helps Feraligatr muscle past the dragon types that would give Typhlosion and Meganium more trouble. Then since you can just use Totodile without having to swap as often you can pretty reasonably just keep using it without turning the game into a slog, which in turn also helps get past Johto's atrocious level curve by not dividing your EXP.

For HGSS it's the most braindead after the split by just being able to run a full physical set, but iirc Cyndaquil is more common for speedruns there, I forget the exact reasons.
