Is it difficult to just not buy the annual mainline releases? For as much hate as they get people keep buying them anyways, but why is that? Addictive gameplay? Fear of missing out?

I agree with you but it's also like 20 hours and then you're just done (if the game doesn't have satisfactory content). It feels so little for all the build up

This and most people move to the most recent games for multiplayer, which in of itself is more than half of the entire experience when it comes to Pokemon anyways. This is why it is so hard to pick up and play any game older than 2 generations, as the multiplayer is pretty dead for anything farther back.

A replacement for it exists and whenever someone tries to post any thread on it looking for people to play with, it dies in 5 hours. It's so much easier to do what most people do anyways and move on to the next generation so that at least random matchmaking battles work and are populated.

That's what I did for SWSH and for BDSP and PLA I just emulated them since it's not like they have worthwhile multiplayer if at all

The people who are dissatisfied with the games are a vocal minority. Their impact on sales is a rounding error for GF since most fans are fine with the newer games.

I rarely ever bought third versions, and USU. Was the breaking point for me. I only got LGP because I needed a Switch for Smash after mine was stolen and that was the only bundle there was. Then I bought SwSh blindly not knowing a thing about it.
I got BDSP for free by gaming postage and PLA was a legitimate purchase but half price.

I know this is a hard concept for this board to understand but people outside this echochamber have different taste. When a franchise has millions of fans there are going to be people who like what the franchise puts out even at it's lowest. For example, look at how many people love Hoenn and Sinnoh.

A bad pokemon game is still better than 90% of games. As much as we act like the new games are terrible, it's more like 8/10 compared to 9/10.
