If you do it on VC Crystal, probably not. Breeding shinies is absurdly easy if you have a shiny parent, so the only thing that will really take time is SRing for your starter.

I can't imagine having so little going on in life that you'd not only consider wasting time trying to get a shiny, but also trying to do a shiny only run, like, just imagine all the different games you could play in the same time spent endlessly SRing for your starter. Shiny hunting is fine if you're a little kid with no other games and a ton of free time, but if you're old enough to post on 4chan (which is unlikely) you should be embarrassed to even consider this.

It’s not that bad in gen 6 and 7 if you don’t SR a starter. You can use hordes or SOS to speed things up.

I did that on my Soulsilver copy,was quite easy but it took a lot of time since I was hunting for specific pokemon for my team, so I ended up spending more time using repels and SRing than actually playing the game.

Nothing wrong with casual shiny hunting sure, but they can take up to multiple hours to find without some sort of exploit.
Just doesn't sound fun to sit at the same spot for potentially days just to make a very tiny lick of progress

Actually I just thought of a fun one, if you're good at fishing you can get shinies super fast in XY. Just make sure you understand chain fishing encounters and have a suction cup pokemon. I did a playthrough like that and got my shinies super fast.

It's obscenely easy in gen 2 and 5+, but some gens are more time consuming than others. On the other hand, if you do PLA it'll take about 20-ish minutes per Pokemon but you're not given much freedom in which Pokemon you'll get.

Not subhuman, I really mean inhuman.
I tried shiny hunting just once rolling a 1/683 chance with eggs and after 15 boxes I had to stop because it was literal torture for me.
How can a human being enjoy doing this?

If you're patient shiny hunting is generally pretty chill, but you really have to ask yourself if you're that patient. The other thing is that you can shiny hunt while doing a lot of other things, so multitasking is not only viable but recommended imo. I'm sure it will not be believed by any of you but I'm a father with a full time job and a wife and I can still manage to shiny hunt between 2 to 5 hours a day, which pulls roughly one shiny per month depending on the encounter rate and the rarity.

TL;DR: You can certainly do it but be aware that it will take time and you need to be patient and lucky
