1) Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire have a feature in the Battle Tower where if you mix records with other people, you go against their teams at the round that they last won.
2) The Sinnoh Tower had the WiFi Tower
3) The Unova Subway has the WiFi Subway
And despite having a feature on the 3DS where you can instantaneously mix records with people who are nearby AND who are far away (StreetPass and SpotPass) as well as the PSS which connects you to people through the Internet, the Battle Maison didn't take either the record mixing approach or the WiFi Tower/Subway approach. It was a lesser Subway and only served to be the baseline postgame entry for gen 6 which tried nothing new other than getting teammates based off of friends, which was effectively the same as how the Battle Subway teammates worked, but had the extra need for adding people to your friend's list.
The Battle Tree really was no better.
