Hop and Hau are only similar in the sense that they're both friendly rivals. They go through very different character arcs.

they should have made his story about directly getting out of leon's shadow, maybe have him resent leon at the beginning (he's his brother after all) and have the story be about trying to make a name for himself

I liked Hop more than Hau, he feels more competitive and cares about losing. However USUM was more of a challenge. The only bad thing from Hop is that he is in the easiest game from the franchise

TPC has been reusing assets since the beginning of the 3ds era. That animation was never exclusive to them since other NPCs uses it thourgh SM/SWSH. Rei/Akari (depending on which one is the rival) uses an animation from Hop (not Lusamine/Hau's but one where he has the hand on his waist and with the other hand makes a gesture of explanation) but the most blatant one must be Zisu's battle intro that was taken from Hop's.
