Rival/previous antagonist jobs to the new antagonist is a pretty good trope.
Problem is that he jobbed in the latter half of the episode and looked like a total chump because Leon was in control the whole match. He deserved more time.

Unironically it would be a bad writing to make them battle in JN. You don't bring major past series rivalry to current series like that, it disrupts the plot focus.
The best choice would be not bring Alain at all, but they did the mistake of brining back the frog loser, so they decided to aknolwedge Alain as well.

It directly confirms that a version of the mega evolution special happened in the game canon, obviously it can't happen exactly like it did in the anime due to no Ash and Kalos not playing out how it did in the anime, but enough of it did happen for Steven to make note of it

If Ash beats Leon who beat Alain then he indirectly beats Alain too - kills two birds with one stone without having to waste an episode on another battle where the winner would obviously be Ash.

It's a sensible move by the producers I think.
