So i am trying to catch up on the gens I missed. How did nobody complain about pokemon bank? Before you didn't have to pay for transfers through pal park on gen 6 they held your transfer back by a pay wall. The writing was on the wall already back then.

No it wasn't. The miniganes, while soulful, were tedious at best.
Bank was the first time we were able to truly mass transfer our collections. It was a unanimously good thing that they promised would let us transfer Pokemon to our grandkids.
The writing was on the wall when they removed the Natdex from SM and transfers from LGPE. With future proofed models and the same engine there was zero excuse to not include all the Pokemon and entries, but Gen 7 marked a turning point in the series after GO where they decided they wanted to completely abandon everything the first six gens were leading up to.

Everything after DS Lites didn't have GBA ports, and transferring up gens that both use a DS cart slot would be jank. I don't think there's a way to do it without some sort of separate storage space.

I never minded Bank having an annual sub fee because ultimately it is server space, but what doesn't make sense is making ANOTHER service that is basically Bank, just more expensive. Why not just update Bank? At the very least, Bank will be free, but it's waaaay after the fact

I accepted the Bank at first because I wanted something like it during Gen 5; a native transfer and storage system. The Pokemon Transporter or whatever it was called meant having two DS systems (presumably you borrow one from a friend). But with the Bank you could move everything around between DS, 3DS or even virtual console GB games using one device. $5 a year for all of this felt like nothing. And since all Pokemon were compatible with the 3DS games (unlike today with the Dexcut), you could keep your entire collection on cart. I haven't paid for the Bank in years, because I just kept all my Pokemon from past games on XY.

In retrospect, I can see that it was probably the start of some negative trends. But at the time I thought it was nice.
